Basic Members Directory National Taiwan Normal University Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies, College of Education Basic Asia Pacific Member Since 2016 Visit School About The groundwork of the Taiwan’s first education effort in Library and Information Studies(LIS) began in 1955, as an undergraduate track within the Department of Adult and Continuing Education at the National Taiwan Normal University. To nurture advanced talents for library and information services in meeting the needs of our knowledge-based society, the University established an independent Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies in 2002. In 2005, we initiated the In-service Master Program of Library and Information Studies, providing professional development opportunities for in-service library and information service practitioners, with emphasis on knowledge and skills of information technologies. Cooperating with the University’s Fine Arts Department, History Department and Chinese Department, in 2006 we launched the Digital Content and Creative Teaching Advanced Certification Program, for further promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and nurturing digital content talents. The Institute was granted the permission by the Minister of Education in 2008 to launch the Ph.D. program, and recruited doctorate students for the first cohort in June 2009. The goal of our Ph.D. program is to nurture innovative talents for research and leadership in library and information services, in responding to the paradigm shift of library and information research, as well as the trends in the digital society. Our department combines traditional library science with contemporary shifts in the information society and various information services. In 1992, the department expanded its facilities by establishing a Library Science Laboratory and a Computing Laboratory for Information Science. Two years later, in 1994, it introduced a Master of Arts program in Library and Information Science. Further curriculum revisions were made in 2002, when the undergraduate program was renamed as the Bachelor of Arts in Information Science. In the same year, the department also launched a Master’s program in Information Management and Public Relations. At the doctoral level, the department initially offered a Ph.D. in Information Studies, which later evolved into the Ph.D. in Information Science, supported by the Fulbright Foundation. In 2003, it was renamed the "Graduate Institute of Library, Information & Archival Studies" to emphasize its commitment to advancing teaching and research in Library and Information Science and Archive Science. In 2009, the Institute launched the E-learning Master Program in Library and Information Studies, the first distance education MA program in the field to receive certification. This was followed by the establishment of the PhD program in 2011. The Institute was established with the goals of integrating theory and practice to advance library development, cultivating high-caliber professionals for library information services and archives management, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
