  • The Discipline of Organizing | iSchools

The Discipline of Organizing embodies a novel book design to enable its broad applicability. View more resources The Discipline of Organizing First published in 2013, and named the ASIST information science “book of the year” in 2014, The Discipline of Organizing is widely used in the iSchools as a primary or supplemental text for courses in Information Organization, Knowledge Management, Digital Collections, Information Architecture, Information Systems Design, Data Science, and other related fields. The Discipline of Organizing embodies a novel book design to enable its broad applicability. Starting with the idea that organizing is an important and ubiquitous challenge in our personal and professional lives, TDO unifies the diverse perspectives of library and information science, informatics and computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy, business, law, and other fields for concepts and methods that guide us in organizing. In particular, TDO ’s content is organized with a core of transdisciplinary concepts with supplemental content (additional text, sidebars, endnotes, etc.) that is tagged by discipline. The 4th edition (2016) of The Discipline of Organizing is freely downloadable here in three versions that differ in the amount of supplemental content. The “Professional” version contains everything, the “Informatics” version omits content tagged as “LIS”, “Museum”, or “Archives”, and “Core Concepts” omits all supplemental content. A collection of case studies that apply TDO concepts to diverse domains is maintained. To case studies Core Concepts Edition Download Informatics Edition Download Professional Edition Download

iCaucus Members Directory Carnegie Mellon University Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy iCaucus United States of America North America Member Since 2008 Visit School About The connections among People, policy, and technology define our time, and will continue to shape the future of humankind. At Heinz College, we’ve understood this since our founding. Our first Dean, William W. Cooper, had a vision of educating students for "intelligent action,” and this is still our primary objective. In our educational programs, we accomplish this through a foundation of data analytics, technology, and experiential learning. Regardless of whether you come here to study Arts Management or Information Security or anything in between, your experience will be built on these elements. Our research programs are best described as data-intensive social science. Our economists, statisticians, operations researchers, computer scientists, and management experts sit side by side, collaborating constantly and not sitting in traditional departmental silos. For this reason, they are able to approach complex societal problems in an altogether different way. The unique co-location of our two schools, the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management, offers opportunities for collaboration that simply cannot be duplicated elsewhere. We also offer two ground-breaking Joint Degree Programs with the CMU College of Fine Arts. Our faculty and students know that exciting things happen when disciplines collide, when differing perspectives come into contact with one another. iSchool Contacts Kirsten Martin Dean Ethics of Technology Contact Jackie Speedy Associate Dean of College Contact Sara Moussawi Sr. Director of the School of Information Systems Contact
