Up < Back to TDO TDO Case Studies Chapter 12 of TDO contains a diverse collection of nineteen case studies that embody Chapter 2’s framework for designing or analyzing an organizing system. Most of the case studies were written by students as “mini term papers” to demonstrate their mastery of TDO. We have collected over 100 of these case studies and they can be freely used to illustrate the broad applicability of the organizing system concept. Please note: The collection is being updated periodically. The Discipline of Organizing embodies a novel book design to enable its broad applicability. View more resources The Discipline of Organizing First published in 2013, and named the ASIST information science “book of the year” in 2014, The Discipline of Organizing is widely used in the iSchools as a primary or supplemental text for courses in Information Organization, Knowledge Management, Digital Collections, Information Architecture, Information Systems Design, Data Science, and other related fields. The Discipline of Organizing embodies a novel book design to enable its broad applicability. Starting with the idea that organizing is an important and ubiquitous challenge in our personal and professional lives, TDO unifies the diverse perspectives of library and information science, informatics and computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy, business, law, and other fields for concepts and methods that guide us in organizing. In particular, TDO ’s content is organized with a core of transdisciplinary concepts with supplemental content (additional text, sidebars, endnotes, etc.) that is tagged by discipline. The 4th edition (2016) of The Discipline of Organizing is freely downloadable here in three versions that differ in the amount of supplemental content. The “Professional” version contains everything, the “Informatics” version omits content tagged as “LIS”, “Museum”, or “Archives”, and “Core Concepts” omits all supplemental content. A collection of case studies that apply TDO concepts to diverse domains is maintained. To case studies Core Concepts Edition Download Informatics Edition Download Professional Edition Download
- Climate Action Coalition | iSchools
View all communities Climate Action Coalition The purpose of the Climate Action Coalition is to promote collaborative, intersectional, interdisciplinary, and impactful climate action-oriented information research within the iSchools organization. The Climate Action Coalition will bring together researchers from iSchools focusing on climate change adaptation, climate resilience, climate justice, and climate change mitigation. The coalition will provide opportunities for sharing transdisciplinary work across iSchools and other disciplines to enrich our understanding and address climate action challenges. Furthermore, the coalition will research and disseminate ways in which our discipline can support and enable the change in organizational processes, policies, and standards that are necessary for societal, governmental, and global change to avert climate disaster. The Coalition will facilitate communication as well as foster new partnerships and ideas among these researchers through a broad range of activities including iConference sessions, online seminars, collaborative projects & research output development. The iSchools Climate Action Coalition welcomes all members who are interested in climate action through research, education, networking, and policy advocacy. A dedicated listserv is available to members of the Climate Action Coalition to stay in touch and share opportunities. Forming the Climate Action Coalition With an aim to promote climate action-oriented information research and collaboration within the iSchools organization, the iSchools Climate Action Coalition was formally formed on 29 March 2023 in Barcelona during iConference 2023. The discussion to form this new Coalition was initiated in 2022 and a group of academics from different iSchools member universities joined together virtually to discuss the formation of the Coalition. It was decided that iConference 2023 would be the best platform to get insights from iSchools leaders and academics to form the coalition and identify its initial tasks to create a membership base. At the formation meeting, iSchools past Chair Dr Gobinda Chowdhury, Executive Director Dr Michael Seadle, iSchools Chair-Elect Dr Gillian Oliver, iSchools Business Manager Slava Sterzer and Program Manager Katharina Gudat and academics from different iSchools member universities were present. The idea of forming the Climate Action Coalition was welcome at the meeting and iSchools Staff committed to support the Coalition. Dr Khalid Hossain from Monash University, Dr Hui Chen from Central China Normal University, and Isabella Corieri from Syracuse University assumed the roles of initial chairs from the Asia-Pacific and North American regions with a decision to have more chairs from the European, African andSouth American regions. - About | iSchools
The iSchools represent an international organisation of over 120 universities on all inhabited continents. A common interest in all aspects of research and teaching about information unites them. Edit Navigation About Us Our Story Mission & Vision Our Goals Board of Directors Ambassadors Meet the Team Our Partners About Us The iSchools represent an international organisation of over 130 universities on all inhabited continents. A common interest in all aspects of research and teaching about information unites them. The scope is deliberately broad and methodologically agnostic, with a strong reliance on the social and behavioural sciences, as well as computing, and linguistics. iSchools topics include artificial intelligence, data science, human-computer interaction, information organisation and access, bibliometrics, and information integrity. Information scientists share a common perspective on the importance of how intelligent creatures and machines understand the universe. iSchools Bylaws Our Story A set of North American schools founded the organisation in 2005, and it incorporated as the “iSchools” in December 2014 and received 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2016. North American institutions are no longer a majority of the iSchools, and the organisation’s administrative offices are currently in Berlin, Germany. Vision As a global organisation, the iSchools engage in recruiting new members from all universities world-wide that offer doctoral programs and active research programs on some aspect of information or Information Science. One goal is to provide programs through targeted projects and activities such as doctoral training/colloquia, joint research activities, and joint grant applications. The vision of the Organisation is to strengthen all aspects of research in information and information science for members across the globe. Mission One of the important characteristics of the iSchools is that all full members have doctoral programs, and recognize the importance of providing a high quality doctoral education as well as opportunities for graduates. Early career faculty are often nothing more than a doctoral student with a job, but without the support structure that they had when they were doing their dissertation/thesis research. In some schools there are enough early career faculty that they can support each other, but in information science that is more rare, and offering opportunities for early career faculty to work together and help each other could be a big advantage. Our Goals Major goals of the organisation are to support member universities in their research and teaching about all forms of information and its implications for our society. The iSchools organisation makes a particular effort to support doctoral students and early career researchers, as well as to facilitate international cooperation. Extensive reliance on videoconferencing makes discussions possible across geographic boundaries without requiring expensive and time consuming travel. Unlike many scholarly organisations that have a clear national base focus, the ischools are genuinely international. Conferences, business meetings, and other gatherings generally take place in multiple time zones and countries to eliminate the need for people to travel. The common language of the iSchools is English, but the staff makes every effort to accommodate other languages. Cross-country community building takes place in iSchools special interest groups such as the Women’s Coalition, Black Coalition, and a set of scholars dedicated to environmental concerns. These groups bring scholars and students together to discuss international and cross-cultural topics relevant to their lives and research. Increasing such opportunities for interaction and collaboration is a goal over the coming years. An equally important goal is to enable more intellectually productive ties within the community so that universities that want to expand their offerings can draw on others for help and advice. iSchools Leadership Ina Fourie iSchools Chair University of Pretoria South Africa Contact Slava Sterzer Executive Director iSchools Inc Germany Contact Dr. Kinshuk North America Regional Chair University of North Texas United States of America Contact Colin Rhinesmith Board of Directors Member University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign United States of America Contact Michelle Kazmer Board of Directors Member Florida State University United States of America Contact Javed Mostafa iSchools Chair-Elect University of Toronto Canada Contact Tina Du Treasurer Charles Sturt University Australia Contact Lihong Zhou Asia Pacific Regional Chair Wuhan University China Contact Diana Daly Board of Directors Member University of Arizona United States of America Contact Jun Deng Board of Directors Member Jilin University China Contact Gillian Oliver iSchools Past Chair Monash University Australia Contact Laura Sbaffi Europe / Africa Regional Chair University of Sheffield United Kingdom Contact Pengyi Zhang Board of Directors Member Peking University China Contact Koraljka Golub Board of Directors Member Linnaeus University Sweden Contact iSchools Ambassadors Brasilina Passarelli Latin America Region University of São Paulo Brasil Contact Sam Oh Inaugural Ambassador Sungkyunkwan University South Korea Contact Meet the Team Slava Sterzer Executive Director Contact Dr. Vera Hillebrand Business Manager Contact Ulrike Liebner Community Manager Contact Past iSchools Leadership 2024-2025 2022-2023 2020-2021 2018-2020 2016-2018 2014-2016 2012-2014 2010-2012 2008-2010 2006-2008 2004-2006 2002-2004 Sanda Erdelez Chair iSchools Chair: Sanda Erdelez - Simmons University, United States of America iSchools Chair-Elect: Gillian Oliver - Monash University, Australia iSchools Past Chair: Gobinda Chowdhury - University of Strathclyde, Scotland Executive Director: Michael Seadle - Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany Treasurer: Eric Meyer - University of Texas at Austin, United States of America North America Regional Chair: Keith Marzullo - University of Maryland, United States of America Asia Pacific Regional Chair: Atsuyuki Morishima - University of Tsukuba, Japan Europe / Africa Regional Chair: Koraljka Golub - Linnaeus University, Sweden Board of Directors Members: Anind K. - Community Informatics Group | iSchools
View all communities Community Informatics Group Community Informatics (CI) focuses on helping diverse communities use Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to meet their goals, bridge digital gaps, and empower citizens. It involves applying ICTs in areas like health, community organization and development, cultural activities, civic management, and e-governance. CI is a multidisciplinary field of research and practice bringing together academic and community partners using methods such as participatory action research. Collaborations with marginalized people whose community cultural wealth and traditional knowledge are especially sought to provide essential guidance to Western science as CI strives for community building and the socially “effective use” of Information and Communications Technologies for social good. CI is concerned with how ICT can be useful to the range of traditionally excluded populations and communities, and how it can support local economic development, social justice, and political empowerment using the Internet. CI is a point of convergence concerning the use of ICTs for diverse stakeholders, including community activists, nonprofit groups, policymakers, users/citizens, and the range of academics working across (and integrating) disciplines as diverse as Information Studies, Management, Computer Science, Social Work, Planning, and Development Studies. Emerging issues within the CI field include: community access to the internet, community information, online civic participation and community service delivery, community and local economic development, training networks, telework, social cohesion, learning, e-health, and e-governance. The Journal of Community Informatics is an online, open-access journal led by members of the iSchools Community Informatics Group. The editors seek to ensure that the content of the journal is global in scope, encouraging the submission of articles from the developing world. For more information, please visit the journal website. - Sungkyunkwan University
Supporting Members Directory Sungkyunkwan University Library and Information Science Supporting South Korea Asia Pacific Member Since 2014 Visit School About The Department of Literature and Information was established in March 1964 as a library department with 20 admissions quota. After that, in 1971, a master's course in graduate school was newly established, and in March 1974, a doctoral course in this study was established for the first time in Korea. In March 1991, the department was renamed Literature Information Department in response to internal and external changes in the information society. As of 2014, the number of graduates has reached about 1,800 over the past 50 years. These alumni play a leading role in various fields such as Korean book relations, media and publishing, general companies, public institutions, and IT fields. The Department of Literature and Information aims to maintain social effectiveness by continuously operating subjects in the traditional subject areas of library and bibliography, while providing more professional undergraduate education in the field of information by reflecting the current trend of the "digital era" and "big data era." As part of this, the Department of Literature and Information obtained membership for the first time in Korea as an international iSchool consortium with very difficult membership conditions such as education and research capabilities in February 2014. Above all, it is currently selecting a specialized project in the Seoul metropolitan area and is establishing a new data science curriculum that trains data scientists in the big data era, and is set to be officially launched in the first semester of 2015. The research area of literature information technology is very wide ranging from information system and IT fields, information management and search, information classification and organization, and ancient literature management to information center management. The research field is largely divided into three areas: social science aspects related to overcoming information problems, humanities aspects for analyzing the organization, content, and types of information of knowledge, and engineering aspects of digital libraries and databases. Therefore, literature information can be said to be a science with convergence-complex characteristics between interdisciplinary systems. The educational goal of this course is to understand the general theories and methodologies of these various areas and to have basic qualities as information and data experts to respond to user needs and organizational and social information needs through the application of IT. Due to the nature of literature information, practical understanding of practice is required, and industry-academic cooperation classes are actively conducted as well as lectures by external experts at the master's and doctorate levels. In addition, foreign teachers are recruited in line with global issues, and as of 2014, the high level of international language (English) lectures is maintained at 44%. After graduating from the Department of Literature and Information, conditions for librarians such as the National Library of Korea, the National Assembly Library, the library of each company, and the school library are basically available, but the scope of entry is diverse. iSchool Contacts Wonsik Shim Head of School Reference information service, Scholarly Communication, Research Data (Policy, Sharing, Platform) Contact Contact Contact
