About

The Department of Information Management at Hacettepe University was established in 1972 by Professor İlhan Kum under the name “Institute of Librarianship and Documentation”. The Department admitted its first undergraduate students in October 1974. Due to its institutional characteristics and the reasons envisaged by the University, the Department developed a model distinct from other departments of librarianship. The undergraduate program, consisting of one year of English language preparatory education followed by four years of professional education and training, underwent revisions at various levels in the 1978/1979, 1983/1984, and 1990/1991 academic years. In 1993, the undergraduate program underwent a structural change and was reorganized into three divisions: Librarianship, Archiving, and Documentation and Information. Undergraduate education and training activities were carried out according to these divisions between 1994 and 2000. Another major change in the academic program of the Department took place following the decision of the Higher Education Council in 2002, which envisaged the restructuring of departments of librarianship. Accordingly, starting from the 2002/2003 academic year, the divisions of Librarianship, Archiving, and Documentation and Information were merged, and the Department began its educational activities under a new curriculum with the name “Department of Information Management”. Since the commencement of its educational activities, the Department has aimed to create an academic and intellectual environment designed to equip students with a strong professional foundation for addressing both theoretical and practical challenges.
