Department of Information Sciences was founded in 1996 under the name Chair for Librarianship. From academic year 2005/2006 it educates students in three main tracks: Information Sciences, Information Technologies and Publishing. Department offers education at all three levels: undergraduate, Master and doctoral.

Currently, the Department employs 23 members of staff who come from a wide variety of disciplines: library science, history, linguistics, literature, engineering, computer sciences, mathematics, publishing, graphic design etc.

In its educational and scholarly activities the Department encourages interdisciplinary research and collaboration with ultimate aim of improving the quality of life of all people, whereby special attention is paid to the role of information experts in promoting all kinds of literacy, critical thinking and social justice.
