The 2025 Treasurer Candidates

I am honoured to self-nominate for the role of Treasurer on the iSchools Board of Directors. My vision is to support a financially sustainable, transparent, and inclusive iSchools organisation that can advance our global mission and strengthen engagement across regions. As Treasurer, I will prioritise clear and accountable financial reporting, strategic budget planning aligned with organisational goals, and equitable resource allocation that supports participation from underrepresented and under-resourced institutions, particularly in the Global South. I bring extensive experience in academic leadership as Head of School at one of the iSchools, large-scale research grant management and governance, with a strong commitment to building collaborative, globally connected networks. I believe sound financial stewardship is critical to enabling innovation, growing our international presence, and supporting emerging scholars and leaders across the information field. I will work closely with the Executive Committee, and the Board to ensure our financial strategies are resilient, forward-thinking, and reflective of the values of our diverse membership. It would be a privilege to serve and contribute to shaping a strong and sustainable future for the iSchools community.
I have been actively engaged in the iSchools community through a range of leadership and service roles. In 2024, I served on the Selection Committee for the iSchools Doctoral Dissertation Award and was appointed as an Advisor for the Asia Pacific iSchools Future Information Leaders Network. I was honoured to deliver the keynote address at the Early Career Symposium at iConference 2024, speaking on the topic of research and life balance for early career researchers. I have held several conference leadership roles, including Chinese Research Paper Track Chair for iConference 2025, Doctoral Colloquium Chair for iConference 2024, and Short Research Papers Chair for iConference 2023. These experiences reflect my strong commitment to supporting early career scholars, promoting regional engagement, and contributing to the growth and inclusivity of the global iSchools community.

I would like to express my willingness to serve as Treasurer of the iSchools Organization. In this role, my vision is to provide a transparent, sustainable, and trusted financial foundation that enables the iSchools to advance its mission: strengthening research and teaching about information, supporting doctoral students and early career scholars, and fostering international and inclusive collaboration. I believe strongly in the values of the iSchools, and this belief has inspired me to take active roles in strengthening our community. Serving as Asia-Pacific Regional Chair, I translated this belief into action by launching the Next Generation Committee and the Information Future Leaders Network with our outstanding colleagues. I also worked to expand the Asia-Pacific iConference as an inclusive venue for collaboration, while demonstrating, especially during the global pandemic, that the iSchools network could act as a truly global platform by gathering and sharing student information pages from member schools worldwide. Alongside this service, I bring administrative experience as Dean at the University of Tsukuba, where I have overseen substantial faculty budgets with an emphasis on accountability. I have also managed multi-year national research grants and directed financial operations for international conferences, balancing sound management with forward-looking planning. If elected, I will bring the same commitment and enthusiasm to ensuring that the iSchools’ financial strategies remain reliable and resilient, working closely with fellow Board members to enable programs that broaden participation across regions, institutions, and communities. Sound finances may be invisible when they function well, but they are indispensable for everything our organization achieves. It would be an honor to serve in this role and contribute to building a financially sustainable and inclusive future for the iSchools community.
My previous experience in the iSchools: Asia Pacific Regional Chair (two terms), iConference 2024 Conference Chair, AP-iConference 2021 Conference Chair, Bylaws Revision Working Group Member, and mentors and reviewers at many iSchools activities.

University of North Texas, USA
Dr. Kinshuk is the Dean of the College of Information at the University of North Texas, a proud Caucus member of the iSchools. Dr. Kinshuk is currently serving iSchools as one of the Board of Directors since January 2024. His aim is to contribute to the iSchools vision to serve its members and the discipline better. Towards that aim, he is serving on the iSchools Finance Working Group. He also provided advice and suggestions to the Bylaws Working Group during bylaws revision process, which received special mention in the announcement regarding Bylaws Update that went out to iSchools members.

University of Missouri, USA
As a member of the Board of Directors, my vision is to strengthen the iSchools organization as a global, inclusive, and forward-looking group that supports innovative research, interdisciplinary education, and meaningful engagement with societal challenges. I am particularly committed to ensuring that early-career scholars and doctoral students are well-supported in what is, for many, an increasingly uncertain and competitive academic environment. As a long-time mentor and educator, I’ve seen firsthand the value of creating spaces for connection, visibility, and professional development. If elected, I would advocate for expanded mentoring initiatives across the iSchools, more robust peer networks, and targeted support structures to help early-career researchers navigate the challenges of publishing, securing funding, and building sustainable academic and professional paths. My experience as a scholar, advisor, and institutional representative has given me insight into the practical realities faced by emerging academics, as well as the structural changes needed to support them. I hope to bring that grounded perspective to the Board—working collaboratively to ensure that the iSchools continues to be a place where scholars at all stages of their careers can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the field.
Although I have not previously served on the iSchools Board of Directors, I have been deeply engaged with the organization through several leadership and service roles and will bring a fresh and grounded perspective shaped by years of active engagement. I have served as my school’s representative to the iSchools organization for the past five years, actively participating in initiatives to support the group’s development during that time. I’ve also taken on leadership roles that reflect my commitment to our shared mission: I co-chaired the Full Papers track for the 2023 iConference, ensuring a rigorous and inclusive review process, and I chaired the North American Doctoral Colloquium at the 2025 iConference, supporting the professional and scholarly development of emerging researchers and scholars. I’ve also contributed a Feature Story to the iSchools blog, highlighting impactful research through faculty exchanges, and I’ve worked with international doctoral students as a mentor. Through these roles—as a representative, organizer, mentor, and scholar—I’ve gained a deep, on-the-ground understanding of the iSchools community: its strengths, its potential, and its opportunities for growth. Combined with my experience serving on the boards of other professional organizations, I am well-positioned to bring both practical insight and strategic thinking to the iSchools Board, and to help advance our collective goals in a thoughtful and inclusive way.

University of Sheffield, UK
As I seek to serve on the iSchools Board of Directors for the European/African region, my vision centres on strengthening our consortium's role as a catalyst for addressing the most pressing information challenges of our time. I will foster an inclusive, collaborative community that empowers all members to thrive and ensure our scholarship creates tangible social impact. My core vision is to bridge research, practice, and social impact by connecting cutting-edge scholarship with real-world applications. Drawing from my experience in health informatics and social care research, I will create structured pathways for research translation, establish partnerships with community organisations, and develop mechanisms that amplify the practical impact of our collective work.
Information inequity remains one of the defining challenges of our digital age. My research with underserved communities, including older carers, LGBTQ+ individuals, and ethnic minorities, has shown me that information science must actively dismantle barriers. As a leader with experience in equality, diversity, and inclusion, I will advocate for research initiatives, curriculum development, and policy positions that prioritise inclusive design, community-engaged scholarship, and equitable access to information resources. I will also bring these principles to the Board, ensuring diverse perspectives are heard, decision-making processes are transparent, and all consortium members feel empowered to contribute to our shared mission.
As General Board Member, my priority will be to enhance collaboration within the European/African region while strengthening transatlantic partnerships. I will achieve this by facilitating joint research initiatives, promoting faculty and student exchanges, and ensuring European and African perspectives are well-represented in consortium-wide strategic planning. I will also support emerging iSchools programs across Africa and Europe and foster connections with institutions in underrepresented regions. Supporting the next generation of academics is also crucial. I will propose establishing mentorship networks that connect emerging scholars, creating opportunities for collaborative research, and developing professional development programs. My experience as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Director, Academic Integrity Officer, and soon as Postgraduate Research Lead has prepared me to provide this structured support for career development.
Building on my editorial experience with information science journals, I will work to strengthen the consortium's role in advancing open science and promoting diverse voices in scholarly publishing. This includes exploring innovative publication models, supporting multilingual scholarship, and ensuring research accessibility across different communities and contexts. My term's success will be measured by tangible outcomes, including increased collaboration between European, African, and global iSchools, enhanced support systems for early-career researchers, expanded community-engaged research initiatives, and stronger connections between our academic work and real-world impact.

The iSchools network stands at the crossroads of knowledge, innovation, and global collaboration. As a Board member, I will work to transform this potential into visible, lasting impact. I envision a future where our schools are seamlessly connected—where international student and faculty exchanges are not exceptions, but part of our culture; where joint research initiatives unite our strengths to address pressing global challenges; and where our collaborative spirit inspires new partnerships across disciplines and borders.
My commitment is to contribute to the vision of making the iSchools not just widely recognized, but unmistakably known as the premier network in our field—respected for academic excellence, valued for our societal contributions, and sought after as a partner for groundbreaking ideas.
During my time with the iSchools Organization, I was honored to be unanimously elected for two consecutive terms—the maximum allowed—as Regional Chair. In this role, I introduced and coordinated a wide range of activities aimed at strengthening regional collaboration, enhancing member engagement, and promoting the iSchools mission. Many of these initiatives, documented and visible on the iSchools website, helped to raise the profile of our region and foster stronger connections among institutions.

I have four objectives: 1) Strive to identify and develop new resources and expand engagements in sustainability activities to ensure long-term success of the iSchools organization, 2) Enhance the profile of the iSchools organization through concrete actions, 3) Connect the professional and academic members of the information field in deeper and more meaningful ways, and 4) Increase the resources and values we can provide to members, particularly students and working professionals.
I have been a long-term participant in the iSchool organization-- starting as an independent academic member and now as a Dean of an iSchool; I have volunteered for several key activities and provided organizational support to the iSchool organization. I have also sponsored, on behalf of the iSchool I represent, iSchool conferences/events.

University of Tsukuba, Japan
I am honored to stand as a candidate for the iSchools Board of Directors. I serve as Dean of my institute and have extensive experience leading large-scale research initiatives and contributing to academic governance. As Asia-Pacific Regional Chair, I have worked with outstanding colleagues to strengthen collaborations across national and institutional boundaries. Together, we launched the Next Generation Committee and the Information Future Leaders Network to support early-career researchers and motivated students, developed the Asia-Pacific iConference into a platform for them to lead and shine, and demonstrated how the iSchools network can share knowledge worldwide during global disasters and pandemics, reinforcing the value of our community. Drawing on this experience, I believe the iSchools’ greatest impact is still ahead of us, as a global forum, a driver of the iField, and a source of tangible benefits for every member school. I envision the iSchools as the leading global network that empowers all researchers and students across regions, advances collaborative research with global impact, and strengthens our collective ability to address pressing challenges. I have ideas to maximize this potential, and I will work to bring them to life together with colleagues worldwide, if elected.
My previous experience in the iSchools: Asia Pacific Regional Chair (two terms), iConference 2024 Conference Chair, AP-iConference 2021 Conference Chair, Bylaws Revision Working Group Member, and mentors and reviewers at many iSchools activities.

Jilin University, China
I am honored to apply for the General Board of Directors.

University of Lille, France
Considering the array of positions presently offered in the iSchools Board of Directors, I would be honored to apply for one of the openings in the European/African region as a general member. With over 30 years of experience in teaching and research supervision in Information and Library Science—spanning Knowledge Organization, the GLAM sector, and Information Ethics—I am well-positioned to advance and strengthen the mission & vision of the iSchools Consortium. One of the greatest strengths of iSchools is their powerful global network. I will actively help maintain and foster this attractiveness, ensuring that technological perspectives do not overshadow the core fundamentals of our discipline and its main branches. Furthermore, the iSchools’ vision, which recognizes training and research as inseparable, offers great potential for expanding research activities across member institutions. I also see a strong opportunity to build additional connections with related learned societies and professional communities such as ISKO, ASIS&T, and IFLA. As an active and long-standing member of ISKO, I am committed to strengthening ties between iSchools and the ISKO network. Enhancing these links through joint conferences and collaborative initiatives would be highly valuable. My work as a researcher, along with my involvement in ISKO and my representation of the University of Lille's iSchool, has provided me with a thorough understanding of the challenges ahead. Fully trilingual (French, English, and Arabic), I have experience managing multilingual and multicultural collaborations. Serving as a member of the Board of Directors would enable me to leverage my international network across North, West, and East Africa, Latin America (especially Brazil), West and East Europe, and the Middle East. My goal is to strengthen the iSchools Consortium by connecting with scholars from these regions, promoting inclusivity, cultural diversity, equity, and addressing the multilingual and multicultural challenges ahead. Recently, my interest in ethical issues related to information and knowledge organization has grown. This has motivated me to establish in 2021 an International Thematic Network in Social Sciences and Humanities, whose main activities—seminars and conferences—focus on Information and Knowledge Organization Ethics. I will mobilize this network, bringing together 13 universities from 4 continents, around the globe, to support the mission & vision of the iSchools Consortium. An outstanding strength of the iSchools is their investment in nurturing the next generation of researchers, especially through the Doctoral Forums at the annual iConferences. I was honored to chair the 2024 European/African Region Doctoral Forum, where PhD candidates gained valuable feedback and forged international academic networks. If given the opportunity, I will work to further reinforce and advance this program for the benefit of future scholars.
In 2024, I chaired the European/African Region Doctoral Forum, where I managed the evaluation of submissions, designed the program, and involved colleagues from partner universities in Europe. I am also very active in disseminating our iSchools’ academic activities, posting about seminars, calls for conference participation, and CFPs, such as those from ISKO-France. Furthermore, I consistently encourage our PhD candidates to engage in doctoral forums and the iSchools Seminar Series to broaden their academic exposure and strengthen their research community links.

Florida State University, USA
I am currently the dean of one of the founding iCaucus members, Florida State University's College of Communication and Information, and personally, I have been involved with the iSchools as a scholar, a teacher, and now as an administrative leader. I am keenly committed to making sure that the iSchools organization serves as the primary networking platform and scholarly nexus for the information fields. The iSchools' global/regional model is extremely effective because it fosters close-knit relationships that are sensitive to local contexts, while offering the strength and breadth of a global organization. I came gladly to the information field in the 1990s, a wonderful time to switch from mechanical engineering to information science, and immediately began participating in the national and global networks afforded by the newly-graphical web and the burgeoning digital libraries community. For the last two decades, the iSchools organization has provided a similar varied and rich space for the global information field. I have been active in the North American Region of the organization for the past several years and I am a strong advocate for, and supporter of, the many strengths and opportunities afforded the iSchools today. As a member of the Board of Directors, I would work collaboratively to continue to seek data about members' needs and develop solutions to meet those needs; to support the existing and important networking and connections, as well as the scholarly nexus, of the iSchools; and to develop a direction of promotion and promulgation, where the iSchools organization takes a strong role in providing evidence-based support for the strategic importance and added value of the iSchools organization for all its members through resources such white papers and tailored data collections.
I have been active in the North American Region as a member and as a dean. I have regularly attended the iConference since 2010 and last year our college was the conference "bag" sponsor. I have been a conference reviewer and an early career colloquium mentor. I am delighted to be an active member of the iSchools.

Peking University, China
My visions for my term in the Board of Directors are:
1. Bridging the global community in a time of uncertainty: In an era of unprecedented global challenges and geopolitical uncertainty, the iSchools community must serve as a unifying force. My vision is to enhance the interaction, communication, and collaboration between our regions. I will advocate for initiatives that facilitate cross-regional dialogue, collaborative projects, and shared learning opportunities to strengthen our collective identity.
2. Championing the human role in the age of AI: As artificial intelligence rapidly advances, the human-centric principles of information science become more critical than ever. The iSchools organization has a responsibility to lead the global conversation on the ethical, social, and cultural implications of AI. I am committed to championing the unique value of human creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. I will work to position iSchools as a leading voice in ensuring that AI is developed and deployed to serve the well-being of humanity.
3. Providing support for young scholars and PhD students: The future of our field depends on the success of young scholars and PhD students. I am passionate about providing them with the support, mentorship, and opportunities for them to thrive. My vision includes advocating for dedicated programs that empower them to navigate their academic and professional journeys, foster their research endeavors, and integrate them fully into the iSchools global community.
4. Enhancing the impact of the iField: The transformative work conducted within the iSchools should be recognized and understood by the wider academic world. I believe we can enhance the impact of our field by actively promoting our research and educational programs. I will focus on initiatives that elevate the visibility of our contributions to critical societal issues, thereby attracting new talent and greater recognition for our discipline.
My previous experience in the board or working groups of the iSchools:
1. Regional Leadership: As an executive member of the iSchools-AP region, I have actively engaged in the business meetings and events. This role has given me a deep understanding of the diverse needs and priorities of our members across the Asia-Pacific region, which I believe is essential for effective global representation on the Board.
2. Active participation in the iConferences: My first iConference was in 2008 when I was a PhD student at the University of Maryland. Since then, I have actively participated in the iConference for many years. I have served as a reviewer for 15 years, a role that has allowed me to contribute to maintaining the high academic standards of our field. I have actively served in organizing roles for iConferences, including SIE chair for iConference 2021, poster chair for iConference 2022, and Chinese research paper chair for iConference 2025.
3. Mentorship and advocacy: I have consistently and proactively supported the next generation of scholars by recommending young faculty and PhD students to participate in initiatives such as the iSchools-AP's iNext organization. This work reflects my personal commitment to fostering a sustainable and vibrant talent pipeline for our community.
I am eager to contribute my time and energy to serve the iSchools community and help guide our organization toward a successful future. I am confident that my experience and passion make me a strong candidate for the General Board.

University of Pittsburgh, USA
Today, the iSchools organization boasts genuine global reach and influence, playing a pivotal role in shaping information science as an academic discipline. Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence present a timely opportunity to reinforce this identity and elevate the indispensable contributions of information scientists and practitioners. Should I be honored with election to the Board of Directors, I will commit to the following objectives: 1. Clarify and Elevate Our Discipline. Leverage the iSchools organization and the iConference as strategic platforms to foster greater collaboration between research and practice, thereby strengthening the definition and recognition of information science in its dynamic interplay with technology, human/society, and information. 2. Enhance Educational Excellence. Foster increased academic rigor and cooperation across member institutions’ educational programs to better prepare future information professionals—individuals capable of harmonizing technological innovation with human values and societal needs. 3. Cultivate Future Academic Leaders. Expand and support the PhD student pipeline, inviting emerging scholars to join the iSchools community as future academic leaders—an essential commitment to the long-term vitality of our organization.
I am a faculty member, scholar, and current Department Chair at iSchool, the University of Pittsburgh—one of the founding iCaucus institutions—and have engaged actively in the iSchools movement since the inaugural iConference in 2005. Through collaboration with leadership at our school and across other iSchools, I have contributed to the global expansion of the movement, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Although I have yet to serve in an official iSchools leadership role, my contributions include supporting early international expansion, and organizing the iConference in both 2017 and 2021. As Department Chair over the past three years, I have gained invaluable frontline insight into the strengths and opportunities within our field. It would be my privilege to serve as a General Board Member for the iSchools organization.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA
My vision for my term in the iSchools Board of Directors is to support the current and future goals of the iSchools Organization. This includes not only working to develop new and innovative ways to support member universities, including doctoral students and early career researchers, but also to continue to think about novel approaches to facilitating international cooperation at a time when this work is more important than ever. If elected to join the Board of Directors I would look forward to leveraging my experience working with the iSchools Organization over the past fourteen years, first as a doctoral student and now as a tenured faculty member in the iSchool at Illinois. Most recently, this experience has included Co-Chairing the iSchools Community Informatics Group alongside Dr. Khalid Hossain at Monash University along with an international group of leaders in our field. For these reasons and more, if elected, I would be honored to join the iSchools Board of Directors as a General Member to advance this vision and support the goals of the organization.
My previous experience working with the iSchools organization includes serving as a conference reviewer for several iConferences over the past fourteen years. Most recently, I have served as a co-chair of the iSchools Community Informatics Group with Dr. Khalid Hossain along with an international group of leaders from iSchools worldwide. During last year's conference, we used our allotted time during the on-site portion of the conference at IU to feature authors of selected papers from the 20th Anniversary Special Issue of The Journal of Community Informatics, for which I am also Co-Editor-In-Chief.

University of Arizona, USA
My vision for serving as an iSchools Board of Directors member centers on advancing high-quality instruction and meaningful student collaboration while addressing critical contemporary challenges facing our global community. While I am a proud researcher in areas including social media, misinformation, and AI use, my focus consistently remains on fostering collaborative learning experiences and publications with students that prepare them for their intended professions and futures. I am particularly committed to evolving academic integrity policy by working directly with faculty and students to iteratively define what ethical production involves in our rapidly changing technological landscape, moving beyond punitive approaches toward frameworks that prepare information professionals for real-world ethical decision-making. Additionally, I am inspired by the question raised in the iConference 2025 keynote by Tshiamo Motshegwa, Director of the African Open Science Platform: "Why aren't there more iSchools in Africa?" I approach this inquiry not with judgment, but as a directive to understand what barriers exist that we can work together to address, broadening access to this incredibly enriching organization and ensuring that the global iSchools consortium truly reflects the diverse perspectives and expertise that strengthen our field worldwide.
Since 2015, amid deepening involvement in iSchools activities, I have come to see the iSchools consortium as a critical center for cohering the many facets of information science in which our members focus. I first presented at an iConference as a PhD student in 2015, joined the University of Arizona’s iSchool as a faculty member in 2016, and became an Associate Dean of the same iSchool in 2023 when we became a college. I represented our college at the request of Dr. Catherine Brooks, our Director and then Dean, in meetings of iSchools heads and in the North American Regional meetings at iConferences 2023 in Barcelona and 2025 in Bloomington. I also engaged in these conferences in mentorship, research presentation, and leadership. In 2023, both online and in Barcelona, I served as a reviewer for the doctoral colloquium and presented two full papers, including one, coauthored with a student, that was a runner-up for the Lee Dirks Top Paper Award. At iConference 2025 in Bloomington, I presented in a panel on undergraduate programs and led discussion of teaching about AI, and I presented both a short paper and an innovative workshop with a student coauthor. More recently, I am in discussion with the iSchools Women’s Coalition leads about co-chairing the group, I have met to explore collaboration with leadership, faculty, and students in the University of Ljubljana’s new iSchool in Slovenia, and I am preparing a trip to Kozybayev University in Kazakhstan in part to explore the possibility of helping their Information Management unit become an iSchool. I do this work because this consortium has offered nourishing connection and reward to our department, college, faculty, and students—not only in organizing events, but in helping us understand who we are, in ways that celebrate instead of reduce the complexity of our teaching and research profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who votes for the member schools?:
Each iSchool in good standing with full membership, nominates one individual to vote on behalf of the iSchool. The invitation to participate in the election will only be sent to this individual.
What does "will be elected in accordance with the Member School’s membership level" mean?:
Each iSchool belongs to one of six membership levels. Associate Members have no voting rights. The other five levels represent full memberships, and votes are weighted as follows:
iCaucus: vote counts x5
Enabling: vote counts x4
Sustaining: vote counts x3
Supporting: vote counts x2
Basic: vote counts x1
Each iSchool votes for one candidate and the voting will be multiplied with the number connected to their level. These weighted votes only apply to the elections for Regional Chairs and General Board of Directors Members.
How do I check the membership level of my iSchool?:
Please go to our membership database (https://www.ischools.org/members) and search for your school (either by browsing or using the search function at the top). Please click on "View school". This opens your schools database entry, which contains your membership level in the upper half of the page.
Who can be a candidate?:
Any faculty member of an iSchool can be a candidate for election. Regional positions and the Chair-Elect position are restricted to faculty members of iSchools located in the respective region. A candidate can be nominated by others or self-nominate, but require endorsement from their iSchool’s leadership. Nominations can be submitted via the Nominations Form below.
How many positions can I be a candidate for?:
A nominee can be a candidate for maximum two positions in the 2025 elections.
What is the timeline?:
July-August 2025: Call for Candidates open
October 2025: Election
January 2026-December 2028: Term in the Board of Directors
