Nominations are solicited from all members of the iSchools organization and judged by a selection committee drawn from leading international schools. Back to Resources Doctoral Dissertation Award The iSchools Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding work in the information field. Nominations are solicited from all members of the iSchools organization and judged by a selection committee drawn from leading international schools. The winner receives a prize of $2,500 USD , the runner up $1,000 USD . Navigation Eligibility Materials Timeline Please note: The iSchools Doctroal Dissertation Award process is under revision at the moment. The next submission cycle will start in spring 2026 for dissertations sucessfully defended between 1 October 2024 and 31 December 2025. Eligibility Each member iSchool can nominate applicants for the award. The applicants should have successfully completed their Ph.D. according to the rules of their university between 01 January 2026 and 31 December 2026. The research can be on any topic in the information field, and use any methodology. Submission Submissions must be made by the official doctoral advisor. Individuals cannot self-nominate. Review Process A Review Committee evaluates the Awards submissions. Judging criteria for the Award concentrate on research question, method and study design and are mainly based on the 10-page summary. Awards submissions go through a two-phase review procedure. In the first phase, which is anonymous, each dissertation summary is reviewed by two reviewers. The best five dissertations are then chosen for closer scrutiny and reviewing of a third reviewer. The dissertation with the best overall reviewing score receives the Doctoral Dissertation Award. Materials The following items should be submitted: Filled out Nomination Form PDF 1: An anonymized summary of the research in English, regardless of the language of the doctoral dissertation. Up to 10 pages including tables & figures, preferably in 12 pt Arial font, with one-inch margins (excl. references). References may be in any standard style format. PDF 2: Recommendation letter from the primary advisor/supervisor (first reader). PDF 3: The complete dissertation in PDF format should be submitted in its original language. An English translation might be requested, if necessary. However, such pages are often provided in local languages only and it is not easy to find them by Web search engines. This project intends to collect and provide links to such portal pages on the Web sites of iSchools and universities, which  can be shared by all interested people. A common interest in all aspects of research and teaching about information unites them. The scope is deliberately broad and methodologically agnostic, with a strong reliance on the social and behavioural sciences, as well as computing, and linguistics. iSchools topics include artificial intelligence, data science, human-computer interaction, information organisation and access, bibliometrics, and information integrity. Information scientists share a common perspective on the importance of how intelligent creatures and machines understand the universe. iSchools Bylaws Our Story A set of North American schools founded the organisation in 2005, and it incorporated as the “iSchools” in December 2014 and received 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2016. North American institutions are no longer a majority of the iSchools, and the organisation’s administrative offices are currently in Berlin, Germany. Vision As a global organisation, the iSchools engage in recruiting new members from all universities world-wide that offer doctoral programs and active research programs on some aspect of information or Information Science. One goal is to provide programs through targeted projects and activities such as doctoral training/colloquia, joint research activities, and joint grant applications. The vision of the Organisation is to strengthen all aspects of research in information and information science for members across the globe. Mission One of the important characteristics of the iSchools is that all full members have doctoral programs, and recognize the importance of providing a high quality doctoral education as well as opportunities for graduates. Early career faculty are often nothing more than a doctoral student with a job, but without the support structure that they had when they were doing their dissertation/thesis research. In some schools there are enough early career faculty that they can support each other, but in information science that is more rare, and offering opportunities for early career faculty to work together and help each other could be a big advantage. Our Goals Major goals of the organisation are to support member universities in their research and teaching about all forms of information and its implications for our society. The iSchools organisation makes a particular effort to support doctoral students and early career researchers, as well as to facilitate international cooperation. Extensive reliance on videoconferencing makes discussions possible across geographic boundaries without requiring expensive and time consuming travel. Unlike many scholarly organisations that have a clear national base focus, the ischools are genuinely international. Conferences, business meetings, and other gatherings generally take place in multiple time zones and countries to eliminate the need for people to travel. The common language of the iSchools is English, but the staff makes every effort to accommodate other languages. Cross-country community building takes place in iSchools special interest groups such as the Women’s Coalition, Black Coalition, and a set of scholars dedicated to environmental concerns. These groups bring scholars and students together to discuss international and cross-cultural topics relevant to their lives and research. Increasing such opportunities for interaction and collaboration is a goal over the coming years. The Teaching & Knowledge Exchange section of the iSchools organisation is dedicated to knowledge sharing, mobility experiences, international cooperation and partnership development. Knowledge sharing and international academic and professional mobility experiences contribute to individual enrichment with clear gains for the entire iSchools community. Supporting talent development, increasing intersectoral collaboration and promoting social connections are key actions of iSchools. The European region of iSchools promotes the organisation of transnational events for knowledge sharing in a multicultural and multilevel dimension, considering the levels from undergraduate to postgraduate. These events include the organisation of face-to-face and virtual lectures and seminars and mobility programs for students, teachers and staff. In addition to these programs, international internships at member universities and partner organisations are also supported.
