  • Associate or Full Professor with Focus on Social and Organizational Informatics

    Penn State University Application Date: 31 December 2024 The College of Information Sciences and Technology  (IST) at the Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an open-rank tenured faculty position focused on social and organizational informatics and located in State College, Pennsylvania. The appointment is at the associate or full professor rank and begins in July of 2025 at the University Park campus. We seek scholars who study the complex interactions between the human, social, cultural, political, organizational, economic, and/or technical factors fundamental to the use of information technologies. We invite humanistic and/or empirical approaches using qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods that generate impact for theory and practice.   • The Cadence of Progress Requires Time for Reflection

    Issue #90 by Gary Marchionini  (UNC School of Information & Library Science) Artificial Intelligence continues to dominate scientific, academic, business, and popular imagination as 2024 draws to a close. Several significant events illustrate how attention has intensified. Two Nobel Prizes announced in October went to scientists who strongly influenced AI foundations and applications.¹ The prize in physics was shared by two scholars who developed neural network algorithms, John Hopfield for Hopfield Networks that mimic associative memory and Geoffrey Hinton for Boltzman Networks. The prize in chemistry was shared by David Baker who constructed novel proteins in the laboratory and by Demis Hassabis and John Jumper who created the AlphaFold system that helps scientists predict protein structures (the protein folding problem) that subsequently guide protein design. These recognitions demonstrate both the growing significance of computer and information sciences and the interdisciplinary and evolving nature of science and scholarship. Earlier the same week, Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google caused headlines and controversy with comments at an AI conference in Washington DC by suggesting that humanity will not meet it climate change mitigation goals and so we should speed ahead with massive, energy-consuming data centers so that AI can eventually solve the climate challenge.² Meanwhile, the fruits of scholarly discussions and debates led to publication in September by The Stanford Cyber Policy Center along with the Digital Economy Lab at HAI of The Digitalist Papers: Artificial Intelligence and Democracy in America.³  This set of essays by prominent legal, technical, and political scholars addresses the ways that AI and other technologies may affect democratic life. These three examples stand along the contemporary stream of articles, podcasts, postings, conferences, and books devoted to AI.   This “all AI all the time” buzz surrounds the daily, incremental discussions and actions that information professionals and professors apply to work and learning. How many iSchool professors and students have already changed the way that they work and learn by using generative AI or other tools?  What policies for how we execute and document our work have arisen in your workplace? In the moment of extreme attention, it is difficult to understand what AI developments are significant, let alone revolutionary. History tells us that socio-technical changes take place in years, decades, or generations rather than minutes and days. Just as Nobel Prize worthy work gets done decades before its impact is honored, we would do well to examine how long-term efforts directed toward fundamental problems of information science are progressing.   In the midst of the high-profile developments above, I was pleased to read a paper in the October issue of Communications of the ACM The Semantic Reader Project*  that reports on progress toward a fundamental information processing challenge that has long bedeviled humanity: how can we improve the consumption and understanding of written information. From Doug Engelbart’s 1960s grand challenge to augment the intellect through tools to ideate, write, and communicate, engineers and HCI researchers in our field have made significant progress on representing text (e.g., from word processing tools to PDF formats, markup, and policies), finding pertinent texts (e.g., search engines), collaborative writing (e.g., Google Docs), and multimedia augmentations of text. We have some understanding of how children learn to read and have developed tools and interventions to support that process, including for those with special needs (e.g., dyslexia, visual impairments). Helping humanity cope with the exponentially exploding amounts of technical and informal text in our lives remains a grand challenge for our field. We want to help individuals or groups browse, read, gloss, interpret, and understand the meaning of text and then integrate that understanding into our personal intellects. New tools and techniques are crucial to continued progress. The Semantic Reader Project is one example of how incremental and systematic research can be executed by interdisciplinary teams of scholars who apply intelligent user interfaces to assist readers. This project now focuses on reading PDF documents, however, the design principles, user studies, and evolving tools illustrate how science progresses with patient and systematic work that adopts and applies new ideas and technologies to address long-standing problems of human information interaction and processing.   • CMU’s Heinz College Announces New Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    Carnegie Mellon University , the number one school in the United States for artificial intelligence education, has announced a new  Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Systems Management (AIM) program , housed in the university’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. “Organizations urgently need professionals who can safely, fairly, and equitably integrate AI into critical decision-making processes,” said Anand Rao, Distinguished Professor of Applied Data Science and AI, faculty co-chair of the program, at Heinz College. “This program delivers all the essential ingredients required to deploy AI systems - critical thinking, technical skills—like process re-engineering, data engineering, and AI model tuning—and management skills needed to deploy AI systems and manage projects that solve major business and societal challenges.” Through Heinz College’s robust industry partnerships, students will have hands-on learning opportunities that allow them to apply their learning to a real-world problem and gain AI experience before entering the job market. Using principles such as systems thinking, design thinking, and computational thinking, students will become proficient in AI evaluation, implementation, and governance. Among the roles this new program prepares students for are AI strategy consultant, AI systems analyst, AI engineer, AI security specialist, generative AI specialist, AI product owner, AI trust and safety officer, AI governance specialist, and AI ethicist or senior analyst for AI and data management. “One of the key strengths of our approach to AI research and education is our deep engagement with real-world applications,” said Ramayya Krishnan, dean of Heinz College. “Heinz College fosters a vibrant ecosystem of partnerships with firms across various sectors, government agencies, and international organizations like the United Nations. Students enrolled in the master’s program will work with real-world clients and solve problems like: Building an AI-powered content-moderation system for social media platforms; Building secure large-language models using open-source frameworks; Using modern AI to categorize Major League Baseball game footage; Safeguarding critical infrastructure, from power grids to voter rolls; Using data science and technology to automate trucking and shipping fleets; and Leveraging advanced AI to categorize and analyze medical imaging for early disease detection.   • Rutgers Award-Winning LIS Department Faculty and Doctoral Students to Attend the 87th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology

    ASIS&T’s theme focuses on putting people first in information research and practice. The School of Communication and Information’s LIS Department and  iSchool  faculty and doctoral students will attend and present at the 87th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), the premier international conference in the field, from October 25-29, 2024, in Calgary, Canada. SC&I is honored to sponsor  the welcome reception.   This year’s theme, “Putting People First: Responsibility, Reciprocity, and Care in Information Research and Practice,” highlights the critical human dimensions of information science, both in physical and virtual spaces. CoLIS i s a series of international conferences aiming to provide a broad forum for the exploration and exchange of ideas in the field of Library and Information Science, Information Studies, and related disciplines. This is organised by the iSchool at the Dept of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Strathclyde , and will take place in person from 2–5 June 2025 at the Technology Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK .   We welcome  diverse contributions offering empirical, theoretical, and historical perspectives on all aspects of the subject, including information science, information systems, library science, archives, records management, digital heritage, and digital humanities.     Submission for papers, posters, panels, alt-events via EasyChair: Monday 9th December 2024. Submission for the Doctoral Workshop via EasyChair: Friday 10th January 2025. Accepted long and short papers will be published in the Information Research  journal.
