Title: Why We Must Study the Information Behavior of Black Single Mothers with Terminal Degrees


Abstract: This interactive discussion addresses a critical gap in library and information science research: the information behavior of Black single mothers with terminal degrees. While Elfreda Chatman’s Small World Theory and Life Course Theory offer powerful lenses for understanding how individuals seek and share information, these frameworks have not been tested with this population. Yet, their lived experiences reveal unique intersections of race, gender, motherhood, and academic achievement, influencing how they navigate information systems to support themselves and their children. This session will outline the theoretical and societal significance of the study, highlight existing literature gaps, and explore the broader implications for education, policy, and equity in information access.
