Informatics Field Featured on NPR

In a Marketplace feature broadcast by National Public Radio, reporter Gregory Warner provided the American listening audience with an introduction to the field of nursing informatics. The segment, titled “Bridging the Gap between Nursing and IT,” aired on May 6, 2011.

Warner’s story centered on Diane Humbrecht, a nursing informaticist at Abington Memorial Hospital who “helps clinicians talk to the IT staff and vice versa.” The role is critical to helping Abington Memorial meet the mandate for hospitals to go electronic before a federal deadline of 2015.

Warner’s report noted that “hospitals are desperate to hire informaticists,” and that the job pays an average salary of $99,000 per year. This confirms what many of us already know—that information schools can help prepare students for high-skilled, high-demand careers.
