The College of Communication and Information at Florida State University

The College of Information at Florida State University is guided by its mission of "People and Information: Making Vital Connections." The College’s goals in education, research, and service and its diverse educational programs enable us to realize this mission.

Our research programs address the study of information from its formation to its use and are interdisciplinary by nature. Our focus on the relationship between information and people and the use of information by individuals and organizations in a wide range of human endeavors requires interactions with many disciplines.
The interdisciplinary nature of the College results in frequent educational and research collaborations with a wide variety of academic units on the FSU campus and elsewhere. This occurs for a number of reasons, but the foremost is that our search for general principles and practices in information studies requires their application in real settings with real users and real information problems. We believe this approach enhances the relevance, value, opportunities, and perspectives of the College’s education and research activities.
We strive to educate students who can identify and overcome the social and technical challenges of the information age through effective leadership. The provision of high-quality, experience-rich instruction forms a strong foundation upon which our bachelors and masters graduates begin their careers in information professions. Our doctoral program’s strong research emphasis prepares graduates to manage the interactions between people, information and technology and to apply their understanding of information, knowledge, communication, and organizations to society’s challenges.
