Reference Abstract, developed by the Online Computer Library Center and the information schools of Syracuse University and University of Washington, is a new search engine that relies on the expertise and credibility of librarians to direct searches. Drexel University associate professor Chaomei Chen’s has created CiteSpace, freely available citation visualization software. CiteSpace creates images based on bibliographic co-citation data sets that allow the user to see in a single image what authors within a field are citing, how often and when, which in turn identifies the seminal works in a field. Students, researchers and laymen can discover, at a glance, the consensus of a particular scientific community as to what are the most important works in the field.
