The goal of iConference 2011 is to create an unparalleled intellectual experience that focuses on information challenges and opportunities, while at the same time promoting excellence in research and building community. Our four-day format will include papers, posters, workshops and myriad alternative events. Also being organized is a Doctoral Student Colloquium and a Junior Faculty & Postdoc Colloquium, popular venues at past iConferences. All will be offered in a shared, onsite experience that fosters interaction, spontaneity, reflection, and forward movement.

We have identified the following cross-cutting themes, but also welcome any contributions that foster engagement and advance the field:

social inclusion • context • materiality • personalization • memory

The 2011 iConference will be an exceptional venue for sharing your insights, and for collaborating with others who share your passion and research interests. The iConference is sponsored by the iSchools organization; however, affiliation is not a prerequisite, and we encourage everyone to participate. Papers will undergo a high-caliber, double-blind review, providing constructive feedback from internationally renowned experts. Papers and poster abstracts will be published in the ACM Digital Library.

Submission Types

Papers

We’re looking for original research, six to eight pages, in accordance with the official ACM Proceedings Format. Full papers are due by the Aug. 30, 2010 deadline. Please download the appropriate template at www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Papers will be refereed in a double-blind process, and accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library.

Posters

We’re interested in posters presenting new work, preliminary results and designs, or educational projects. Please submit poster abstracts of one to two pages in accordance with the official ACM Proceedings Format. You can download the appropriate template at www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Poster abstracts will undergo a blind review, and accepted posters will have their abstracts published in the ACM Digital Library.

Alternative Events

These can include panels, fishbowls, performances, storytelling, roundtable discussions, wildcard sessions, demos/exhibitions, and more. All should be highly participatory, informal, engaging and pluralistic. Proposals should be 800 to 1,200 words in length and describe organizers, participants, purpose, activities, agenda, ramp-up and follow-through. Proposed alternative events will be reviewed for quality and organization of content, justification of format, evidence of interactivity and participatory approaches, and inclusivity/diversity of participation.

These can be half- or full-day. Please contact Workshop Chair . in advance of the 8/30/10 submission deadline in order to establish a dialog that will inform your abstract. Workshop abstracts will be published in the iConference Proceedings Repository.

Formatting

To facilitate publication in the ACM Digital Library, we are asking that all papers and poster abstracts follow the official ACM Proceedings Format. Please download the appropriae template at www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Templates are available in Word, Word Perfect, and LaTex2e formats.

How to Submit

Submissions are being accepted now, and can be made at http://ischools.org/ocs/index.php/iConf/2011. The deadline is August 30, 2010.

Timeline

  • June 2010: Open for submissions.
  • 8/30/10: Deadline for full contributed papers, poster abstracts, alternative events proposals, and finalized preconference workshops.
  • Early November: Decisions will be made and authors can access reviews.
  • 12/1/10: Final versions of all contributions due.

Review Criteria

Submissions will be judged on such criteria as quality of content, significance for theory, method, design, education or engagement, originality and level of innovativeness, and quality of presentation.
